Why it matters
Grace Church began in 1806 beside Trinity Church and moved north with its parishioners in the 1840s. Its site is a gift of the street plan: Broadway bends at 10th Street, so the white marble spire closes the view for anyone walking up the avenue.
James Renwick Jr. completed the church in 1846, before St. Patrick's Cathedral. It became the fashionable church of 19th-century New York, yet the parish also built chapels, a hospital and neighborhood services for the poor east of Broadway.
