Why it matters
St. Anthony's was established in 1859 as the first U.S. parish formed specifically for Italian immigrants. Franciscans re-established it in 1866, and the parish grew with the South Village around it.
Arthur Crooks designed the present Romanesque Revival church, built between 1886 and 1888. The Franciscans still run the parish. The Houston Street side stayed hidden behind tenements until the street was widened in the early 1930s.
