Why it matters
St. Paul's opened in 1766 as a chapel-of-ease for Trinity Church. It survived the fire of 1776 that destroyed the first Trinity, and George Washington attended a service here on April 30, 1789, after taking the oath as president.
After September 11, 2001, the chapel stood across from the World Trade Center site and served recovery workers for nine months. Its interior now holds both stories: an altarpiece by Pierre Charles L'Enfant and memorials from the recovery.
