Why it matters
Cardinal Francis Spellman, Archbishop of New York and head of the U.S. military vicariate, founded this church in 1944 during World War II. The name marks the Allied war effort, and it's also known as the War Memorial Church.
Eggers & Higgins designed the brick Georgian Revival building, which was dedicated in 1947. Today it shares a parish with St. Peter's on Barclay Street.
